The letters are stylized differently to give an extraterrestrial and distinctive appearance but in the Star Wars series it is systematically a mono-alphabetic substitution of the letters A-Z and the numbers 0-9 by a glyph/design/symbol.
The Outer Rim Alphabet is easily recognizable thanks to its stylized and distinctive letters, which can resemble claw marks.
It is often used in Star Wars films, series, books and video games to write names and messages of alien characters.
