Answers to Questions (FAQ)

What is Klingon? (Definition)

Klingon (or tlhIngan Hol in Klingon) is a constructed language (conlang) created by linguist Marc Okrand for the Star Trek universe. His goal was to give the Klingons a deeper and more believable culture.

The language is distinguished by its unusual grammatical structure, aggressive vocabulary, and distinctive sound aesthetic.

What is pIqaD alphabet?

pIqaD is the name of the writing system used to transcribe Klingon (the equivalent of our alphabet).

char(65)achar(71)ghchar(77)mchar(81)qchar(88)tlh
char(66)bchar(72)Hchar(78)nchar(75)Qchar(85)u
char(67)chchar(73)Ichar(70)ngchar(82)rchar(86)v
char(68)Dchar(74)jchar(79)ochar(83)Schar(87)w
char(69)echar(76)lchar(80)pchar(84)tchar(89)y

Although Klingon is generally written in the Latin alphabet, pIqaD represents the native Klingon script in the franchise's productions.

How to interpret Klingon signs?

The writing in Klingon has a handwritten form with the pIqaD alphabet (the symbols above) and a literal / phonetic form. dCode allows the transformation of these pIqaD symbols into Latin alphabet.

Example: char(67) for ch

The alphabet is primarily used for decorative and symbolic purposes. The most common form of written Klingon uses the Latin alphabet (like English) to represent the sounds of the language.

The English translation of Klingon's words is not available, however there is a semi official dictionary like The Klingon Dictionary here (affiliate link)

How to write in Klingon?

The Klingon script is a substitution of the characters of the Latin alphabet by their Klingon symbol.

Example: a is written char(65)

There are some exceptions like poly-characters substitution ch, ng, gh or tlh

Example: tlh is written as char(90)

English words must be translated into Klingon to keep the original language spirit.

Example: tlhIngan maH translates We are Klingon

How to translate text in Klingon?

The literal translation of a text in English into Klingon can be realized with Microsoft Bing Translator that offers to translate some words and sentences: here to complete with dCode in order to write with Klingon alphabet.

When to use Klingon?

The Klingon language is used in The Star Trek series, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery on the Kronos planet and by all the geeks fans of the series (especially the fans of Spock).

Google offers a version of its search engine in Klingon: here
