Answers to Questions (FAQ)

What is the Infernal Alphabet? (Definition)

The Infernal Alphabet is a fictional alphabet used in the Dungeons & Dragons universe (DnD).

In official books, notably the 5th Edition Player's Handbook, this alphabet appears as a set of stylized glyphs, each corresponding to a letter of the Latin alphabet.

In the game's lore, this alphabet is associated with the devils of the Nine Hells and their language, Infernal, sometimes described in older editions as the language of the baatezu.

How do I write in Infernal?

Writing in the infernal alphabet consists of replacing each letter of the Latin alphabet with its corresponding infernal glyph. Note that the correspondence table distinguishes between uppercase and lowercase letters, and that numbers are also coded:

How to translate the Infernal?

To understand a text written in an infernal alphabet, the user must generally replace each symbol with its corresponding Latin letter.

If the text is simply a transcription, decoding is direct.

Example: char(68)char(101)char(118)char(105)char(108) translates to DEVIL

How to recognize the Infernal?

A text written in the D&D Infernal Alphabet can be recognized by its glyphs, which are generally stylized, or by its symbols resembling runes or sigils.

The complete transcription is provided in the Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook 5th edition.

In a narrative or puzzle context, the Infernal Alphabet is frequently associated with: devil-related scrolls, infernal contracts, and inscriptions from the Nine Hells.
