Answers to Questions (FAQ)

What is the Magi Alphabet? (Definition)

The Alphabet of the Magi, also called the Alphabet of Apollonius of Tyana or the Characters of the Angel Raphael, is an esoteric alphabet derived from the Hebrew alphabet.

How to encode a message with the Magi Alphabet?

Encoding a message with the Magi Alphabet involves replacing each letter of the Latin alphabet with its corresponding Magi symbol. The process is a simple letter-by-letter substitution according to the table:

א Aleph (A)char(1488)ב Beth (B)char(1489)ג Gimel (G)char(1490)ד Daleth (D)char(1491)
ה He (E)char(1492)ו Vav (V/F/U/W/Y)char(1493)ח Het/Cheth (H)char(1495)י Yod (I/J)char(1497)
כ Kaf (K)char(1499)ל Lamed (L)char(1500)מ Mem (M)char(1502)נ Nun (N)char(1504)
ע Ayin (O)char(1506)פ Pe (P)char(1508)ק Qof (Q)char(1511)ר Resh (R)char(1512)
ש Shin (S)char(1513)ת Tav (T)char(1514)ס Samech (X)char(1505)ז Zayin (Z)char(1494)

MAGI can be transcribed letter by letter in Hebrew as מאגי and therefore in the Magi alphabet. char(1497)char(1490)char(1488)char(1502)

Strict transliteration between Hebrew and Latin is impossible. The lack of direct phonetic equivalence and the very nature of Hebrew (the abjad consonant system versus the Latin vowel system) prevent any character-by-character correspondence.

How to decode a message written in the Magi Alphabet?

Decoding the Magi alphabet is done in the reverse order of encoding. Identify each Magi symbol and use the correspondence table to find the corresponding Hebrew letter (and by extension, the Latin letter).

Example: char(1500)char(1488)char(1508)char(1512) can be transcribed as רפאל, which is the Hebrew word for RAPHAEL

How to recognize the Magi Alphabet?

The Magi alphabet is distinguished by its angular, handwritten glyphs, inspired by ancient Hebrew (straight lines, sharp angles).

The alphabet can appear on engravings on talismans, in occult manuscripts, or in grimoires of ceremonial magic.

The alphabet is associated with the angel Raphael, the Magi, or Apollonius of Tyana.

What are the sources describing the Alphabet of the Magi?

Here are the main known sources for the history of the Magi Alphabet:

— 1539 (Theseus Ambrosius): First known publication in Introductio in chaldaicam linguam. The alphabet is presented as a system linked to the angel Raphael and mystical traditions.

— 16th century (Blaise de Vigenère): The alphabet is also mentioned under the name Alphabet of Apollonius of Tyana, a name given by Vigenère in his writings on secret and symbolic writings.

— 1613 (Claude Duret): The alphabet is reproduced in Thresor de l'histoire des langues de cet univers under the name Caractères de l'Ange Raphaël (Characters of the Angel Raphael).

— 1888 (S. L. MacGregor Mathers): The alphabet appears in occult publications associated with the Key of Solomon under the name Alphabet of the Magi.
