How does the abbreviation detector work?

This script generate a glossary by detecting abbreviations/acronyms (usually uppercase) and shows a list of potential definitions (from the text).

This abbreviations' list generator is convenient to write a report, a document, a dissertation, an article, a thesis, etc.

What is an abbreviation?

There are several types of abbreviation:

Abbreviation via the initials of the words

Usually capitalized, followed by a period

Example: J. for John

Except for some units of measure

Example: m for meter g for gram, etc.

Abbreviation via the first letters

Most often followed by a period.

Example: Prof. for professor

Abbreviation via a selection of letters

Sometimes it uses the start and end of the word (often without point)

Example: Dr for doctor

Sometimes she uses the outstanding letters of the word

Example: sth for something

Initials

Initials of a group of words can then form a new word. Initials are pronounced by reading the names of each letter.

Example: VAT for value added tax

All words of the group are not necessarily in the initials (some word, and often shorter ones, are sometimes omitted)

Example: USA for United States of America

Acronym

An acronym is like initials is pronounced like a normal word.

Example: 'ASCII' for American Standard Code for Information Interchange

It is possible to use more letters than only initials of words to improve pronunciation of the acronym.

Example: ARPANet for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

The acronym can become a common name, it will be written lowercase.

Example: radar for radio detection and ranging
